submit to one engine that does not necessarily mean you will appear on another.
There are basically three types of search engines from a marketing perspective: standard search engines,
directory based engines, and pay-per-click engines. The standard search engines are databases that
rely on public submission of web sites and then the search engine scans all of the web pages at the
given site for keywords; Google is an example of a
standard search engine. Directory-based search engines are massive directory listings where humans
add addresses to categories; Yahoo is an example of a
directory based search engine. Pay-per-click search engines look and feel like a standard search engine
from the user's perspective but here advertisers rather than site content determine listing placement;
Overture is an example of a pay-per-click search engine.
The process and cost of getting onto these search engines varies greatly. With standard search engines
you typically go to the search engine site and then choose to submit a site. There is usually no cost
for this, and the search engine will scan your site within the next few weeks. To get onto a directory
based search you will most likely have to pay the company a fee to be included and then wait 2-4 weeks
for placement. To have your web site listed on the pay-per-click search engines all you have to do is
pay the search engine some money and you will be typically listed within several hours.
